How to Reach Tso Moriri, Ladakh
Route 1: Leh to Tso Moriri via Chumathang
This is the shortest and most popular route from Leh to Tso Moriri, covering a distance between 220 and 240kilometress. The roads are generally well-maintained, allowing you to complete the journey in about 6 to 7 hours, though frequent stops for photography might extend the travel time.
Starting from Leh on the Manali-Leh Highway, you can pause at Upshi for snacks, as food options beyond this point are scarce until Karzok. From Upshi Market, take a left turn toward Mahe. After reaching Mahe, continue onward to Karzok. Along the way, be sure to stop at scenic viewpoints like Kiagar Tso, a favourite spot for travellers. When you reach the next fork, avoid the tarred road and proceed straight toward Karzok, where Tso Moriri is located.

Route 2: Leh to Tso Moriri via Tso Kar and More Plains
This route is longer, about 260kilometress, and typically takes between 7 and 8 hours to complete. Road conditions may be rougher, but the journey rewards you with vast open landscapes and views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including the chance to visit Tso Kar Lake.
This path initially follows the same road as Route 1. Instead of turning toward Chumathang, head to Rumtse on the Manali-Leh Highway. After Rumtse, you will ascend the Tanglang La pass and then proceed to Deburring, a good spot to rest and take photos, although shelter options are limited.
Continuing along the highway, you’ll encounter a left turn toward Tso Kar. This section also features some roadside dhabas where you can stop for refreshments. The first lake on this route appears about 22 kilometres after this diversion.

Route 3: Leh to Tso Moriri via Pangong Tso and Chushul
For those seeking adventure and solitude, this is the least travelled but most scenic route, spanning roughly 650 to 700 kilometres for a round trip. This path takes you through remote areas, passing the famous Pangong Tso Lake.
From Leh, travel to Pangong Tso, then continue to Chushul village near the border. The 50-kilometre stretch between Spangmik and Chushul is an unpaved dirt track, and travellers must show permits at Merak en route.
From Chushul, head to Mahe, about 77 kilometres away, where you can rest before continuing to Karzok via Sumdo and Namashang La, covering another 63 kilometres.
Important notes: This route is open only to Indian nationals; foreign tourists need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to travel here. Also, fuel stations are scarce, so carry sufficient fuel before starting.

Best Time to Visit Tso Moriri, Ladakh
Tso Moriri is situated in the Changtang region of Jammu and Kashmir, where winters bring frigid temperatures. There are no ATMs near Tso Moriri, and with no internet connectivity in the area, online banking options are limited. It’s highly recommended to carry sufficient cash with you for your stay.
Petrol Pumps:
The nearest petrol station is in Karu, approximately 24 kilometres from Tso Moriri. It’s best to refuel your vehicle in Leh before heading out. If you are travelling via the Leh-Manali Highway, make sure you have enough fuel to reach Tandi.
Food Options:
Food stalls and small eateries are available in Korzok Village. Additionally, most camps and homestays near the lake serve authentic local cuisine, giving you a chance to experience traditional flavours during your visit.
