Tso Kar Lake

Tso Kar Lake

Tso Kar Lake, nestled in the Rupshu Valley of Southern Ladakh, is the smallest of Ladakh’s three famous high-altitude lakes. Its size and depth change throughout the year, yet its natural charm remains constant. Due to the significant salt deposits along its shores, the lake often appears completely white from afar, earning it the nickname “White Lake.” The vivid blue waters, set against the backdrop of rugged desert mountains, create a breathtaking, postcard-perfect scene.

Unlike the more popular Pangong and Tso Moriri, Tso Kar offers a serene and less crowded experience. Its banks are often dotted with local salt collectors, while the surrounding marshlands attract a variety of bird species year-round. The elegant black-necked crane is a frequent visitor here, along with other wildlife such as the Kiang (Tibetan wild ass) and Tibetan gazelle, which can often be spotted grazing near the lake’s shores.
