Nubra Valley is only accessible from Leh, so your journey begins in Leh, no matter which route you choose. There are two main ways to get there, the popular, high-altitude adventure via Khardung La Pass or the quieter, offbeat route via Wari La Pass.
The most travelled and iconic route, this road takes you across Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes at an altitude of 18,380 ft. It’s not just a gateway to Nubra Valley, but also a historic route that once formed part of the caravan trade path to Kashgar in Central Asia.
From Leh, your first stop is Phyang, about 16 km away, home to the 16th-century Phyang Monastery. As you climb higher through dramatic mountain landscapes, you’ll reach South Pullu, where you submit your travel permits. The panoramic views from here, including the entire Indus Valley, are breathtaking.
Next comes Khardung La Village and North Pullu, another permit checkpoint. From here, the descent into Nubra Valley begins. At Khalsar, the road splits:
Right to Sumur, Panamik, and Warshi
Left to Diskit and Turtuk
For those seeking a less crowded, more adventurous journey, the Wari La Pass route offers solitude and raw Himalayan beauty. Standing at 17,427 ft, Wari La is challenging, with steep climbs and rough roads, completely impassable in winter.
From Leh, take the Manali–Leh Highway to Karu (35 km away), then continue towards Upshi, a region painted in striking natural colours. A signboard here points towards Wari La, but be prepared, this route is for seasoned drivers and bikers.
After navigating rugged mountain roads, you’ll arrive at Agham, from where the terrain smooths out, leading to a serene stretch towards Khalsar, the gateway to Nubra Valley.

Best Time to Visit Nubra Valley
Although Nubra Valley can be reached year-round via the legendary Khardung La Pass, the highest all-weather motorable civilian pass in the world, certain months offer a more comfortable and scenic experience. The ideal time to plan your trip is between April and June or September and October, when the region enjoys clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and minimal chances of rain or snow.
