The Leh Palace is one of the most iconic tourist attractions in the Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir, situated in the heart of Leh town. Built in the 17th century, this majestic royal palace was initially established by Tsewang Namgyal, the founder of the Namgyal Dynasty, and completed by his successor, Sengge Namgyal.

Designed as the royal family’s residence, the palace later fell into the hands of Zorawar Singh Kahluria during an invasion. Despite witnessing many years of conflict and turmoil, Leh Palace has remarkably preserved its grandeur and continues to captivate visitors.

The palace stands nine stories tall, with each level serving different functions during its prime. Its architectural style draws inspiration from the famous Potala Palace in Lhasa, showcasing exquisite medieval Tibetan design. At night, the palace appears even more majestic, and from its vantage point, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the lively Leh town and the towering Stok Kangri mountain range.

History of Leh Palace

Leh Palace is a remarkable landmark nestled in the enchanting land of Ladakh, with a history that is both fascinating and tinged with melancholy. The foundation of the palace was laid in 1553 by Tsewang Namgyal, the founder of the Namgyal Dynasty. However, its construction was halted and later completed in the 17th century under the reign of Sengge Namgyal.

This vast, nine-story structure was designed as the royal residence. The upper levels were designated for the royal family, while the lower floors served practical purposes such as stables and storage. The palace flourished through the 19th century, symbolising the power and prosperity of the Namgyal rulers.

In the mid-1800s, the region was invaded by the Dogra forces, who seized control of the palace, forcing the royal family to flee to the nearby Stok Palace. Under the Dogra general Zorawar Singh’s control, the palace remained occupied for a time.

However, as the Dogra dynasty expanded into Tibet and Baltistan, the palace was gradually abandoned, left without caretakers or residents. This abandonment has earned Leh Palace the nickname of the “forgotten monument,” standing as a silent witness to Ladakh’s turbulent past.
