Set at an elevation of about 8,610 feet, this peaceful settlement is surrounded by dense pine forests and crisscrossed by the clear waters of the Lachung River. Known for its cascading waterfalls and apple orchards, Lachung offers a refreshing blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.
The village lies approximately 118 kilometres from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, and is renowned for attractions such as the historic Lachung Monastery, the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary in Yumthang Valley, nearby hot springs, and excursions to Zero Point, located about 40 kilometres away. Interestingly, the word Lachung translates to “Small Pass.” The road journey from Gangtok to Lachung is itself a memorable experience, filled with scenic mountain views.
The nearest major airport to Lachung is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal, situated around 125 kilometres away. Bagdogra is well-connected with cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai through regular flights. From the airport, travellers must proceed to Gangtok, as all routes to Lachung pass through the state capital.
Gangtok is roughly a four-hour drive from Bagdogra. Upon reaching Gangtok, travellers are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Lachung. This permit can be arranged through a registered travel agent or applied for online. After spending a day in Gangtok to complete permit formalities, travellers can depart early the next morning for Lachung.
Sikkim also has its own airport at Pakyong, located about 35 kilometres from Gangtok. Situated at an altitude of approximately 4,590 feet, Pakyong Airport is among the highest airports in India. While flight operations are currently limited, expanded connectivity in the future will significantly reduce travel time to Gangtok and onward to Lachung.
For travellers choosing rail travel, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station in Siliguri is the closest major railhead, located around 191 kilometres from Lachung. NJP is well-connected to major Indian cities, including Kolkata and Delhi.
From NJP, the journey continues by road to Gangtok, which serves as the mandatory transit point. Travellers are advised to stay overnight in Gangtok to arrange the Inner Line Permit. The following morning, Lachung can be reached via a scenic drive of approximately 102 kilometres, which typically takes 4 to 5 hours.
Lachung enjoys road connectivity with several destinations in and around Sikkim, including Gangtok (103 km), Mangan (51 km), Darjeeling (169 km), and Jalpaiguri (231 km). However, Gangtok remains the most convenient base for accessing Lachung.
The road journey from Gangtok to Lachung covers about 102 kilometres and usually takes around 4 hours. After arriving in Gangtok, travellers should arrange the required Inner Line Permit through a travel agent. Once the permit is issued, the drive to Lachung begins early in the morning.
Although certain stretches of the road may be uneven, the overall journey is smooth and extremely scenic, offering stunning views of valleys, rivers, forests, and mountain landscapes.
