Demul is a remote yet charming village in Spiti Valley, situated at an altitude of about 4,340 meters (14,240 ft). It is best known as a model for sustainable and community-based tourism. The villagers here follow a rotational homestay system – every tourist is allotted a homestay in turn, ensuring equal income distribution among all families.

Surrounded by vast grasslands and barren mountains, Demul is one of the most peaceful spots in Spiti. The village is also a popular base for short treks and yak safaris, offering travellers a deep dive into authentic Spitian culture and traditions.

  • Food – Only available in homestays, where hosts serve traditional Spitian food like thukpa, momos, dal, rice, butter tea, and tsampa.

  • Stay – Homestays run under the village’s community system (basic but comfortable).

  • Shops & ATMs – None; nearest at Kaza.

  • Network – Very weak to none; BSNL may work occasionally.
